A side event at the 34th Session of the UN Human Rights Council (HRC)

ARTICLE 19, together with the Privacy in the Digital Age Core Group: Brazil, Germany, Austria, Liechtenstein, and Switzerland, invite you to a side event to discuss the relationship between the right to freedom of expression and the right to privacy – how they are mutually reinforcing, and how conflicts between them can be reconciled.

Digital technologies have facilitated huge advances for expression and access to information, while also exponentially increasing the creation of private data. This has enabled violations of both the rights to privacy and freedom of expression on a scale not previously imaginable. The standards set at the HRC on how these rights should be interpreted will have tangible impacts globally. During the 34th Session a resolution on the Right to Privacy in the Digital Age will be considered, addressing several of these issues.

During the event, ARTICLE 19 will introduce its new standard setting document: “Principles on Privacy and Freedom of Expression”, which intend to advance normative understandings of how privacy and freedom of expression interact.
