Moldova and Ukraine: ‘DigitalSafeguard’ – Towards safer digital spaces for all - Digital

Civil society groups in Moldova and Ukraine are increasingly operating in a restricted digital environment. Activists, journalists, and vulnerable communities are facing escalating risks, including doxxing, hacking attacks, surveillance, phishing, and online harassment. These threats, often occurring simultaneously, place immense pressure on individuals, hindering their ability to carry out vital work and speak freely. This not only undermines human rights online but also creates a hostile digital environment. What can be done to remedy this situation?

To address these challenges, ARTICLE 19, Digital Security Lab, Information Center ‘GENDERDOC-M’ (GDM), and the Moldovan Association of ICT Companies (ATIC) have joined forces to launch ‘DigitalSafeguard’ – a programme designed to promote a safer digital landscape in Ukraine and Moldova, where everyone, including vulnerable groups, can exercise their fundamental rights in a supportive and enabling environment.

The core of ‘DigitalSafeguard’ lies in capacity building, adopting a two-fold approach: strengthening the resilience of digital security providers and enhancing their ability to deliver effective support, while also equipping civil society with practical tools and strategies to protect themselves against digital threats. Participants will benefit from a variety of workshops, in-person training, mentoring, emergency assistance, and technical support – all delivered by renowned experts in digital rights.

We firmly believe that fostering collaboration among key stakeholders, promoting knowledge-sharing, and cultivating essential new skills will contribute to a more robust and secure digital environment for all.
