ARTICLE 19 is saddened to learn of the passing of Annabelle Sreberny, a leading writer, academic, teacher, and powerful advocate for human rights. Annabelle was an invaluable board member and friend to ARTICLE 19. At this sad time, we extend our deepest condolences to Annabelle’s family and friends, and express our gratitude for her support and guidance, always driven by her passionate commitment to human rights and justice.
Annabelle Sreberny, who died on 30 December, was Professor Emeritus at the Centre for Global Media and Communications at SOAS, University of London, and led the centre’s pioneering work on media and communications through a feminist, and truly global, lens, championing diverse perspectives that went beyond the Western and colonial-centred theories and viewpoints of many academic environments.
Annabelle was an active, engaged member of the MENA advisory board of ARTICLE 19. We were honoured to have her support, and to benefit from her guidance, vision and passion. Her work focused on justice and equality for marginalised communities, particularly in the Middle East and Iran, and on building social and democratic change. With this, along with her recognition of the role independent media and the internet played in achieving these goals, Annabelle brought unique expertise and insight to ARTICLE 19’s work on and advocacy in the region.
Annabelle Sreberny will be much missed by ARTICLE 19 and the wide community of colleagues who she worked with throughout her career. We pay tribute to her: for championing freedom of expression, her efforts to make the world a more just, equal place, and for the inspiration, drive and commitment she has left for us all.
