Salary*: UK – £56,961 + Benefits/  USA – $63,814 to $82,959 + Benefits/ Netherlands – €67,286 + Benefits

* The seniority and salary is determined on the basis of a combination of factors, including skills, experience, and location. If appointed as a Legal Officer, the salary in the UK will be £51,387 + Benefits, the USA will be $59,488 to $63,814 + Benefits, and in the Netherlands it will be €60,701 + Benefits.

About the role

Under the supervision of the Senior Director for Law and Policy, you will play a crucial role in protecting freedom of expression and freedom of information globally, with a focus on data-intensive technologies/ artificial intelligence (AI).

You will provide legal and policy expertise and develop and promote our policies and positions in your area of focus.

You will also work closely with ARTICLE 19 colleagues to address emerging challenges posed by AI, and to identify new opportunities for engagement and advocacy on them in target countries and regions.

What you will be doing day to day

  • Provide high level legal and policy advice on freedom of expression
  • Contribute to the Law and Policy Team’s strategic planning, development and projects implementation
  • Contribute to international and regional advocacy

What you will bring to the role

  • Law degree. Admitted to practice in a national bar or equivalent is highly desirable
  • Sound knowledge of international law on freedom of expression and freedom of information, in particular a solid grasp of standards on AI
  • Experience in advocacy and/or litigation at international and regional human rights systems.

ARTICLE 19 EA aims to engage a consultant to facilitate an exploratory and preparatory co-design (co-creation) process during which project stakeholders will actively participate in shaping and refining the project’s conception and development from its outset. Stakeholders participating in the process will explore opportunities to address the problem and leverage their diverse knowledge, experience, expertise and networks to create solutions that are effective and sustainable.

The overall goal of the co-design phase is to develop the final project that meets the needs and expectations of all stakeholders while also fostering collaboration, innovation, and long-term success.

Who we are looking for:

Experience in Project Cycle Management
Expertise in participatory processes, facilitation and collaboration involving multiple stakeholders;
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to foster productive dialogue and consensus – building among diverse parties;
Experience in implementing and/or participating in co-design processes;

Where we work

Our teams defend freedom of expression and access to information from nine regional hubs around the world, delivering change through local as well as international influence. We have teams leading advocacy in cities such as New York and Dhaka, and thematic experts driving policy change in places as diverse as Nairobi and Tunis. Find out more
